The lone man was red in 1998.

For a change of pace I walked east instead of west yesterday morning. Here is some of what I saw along 110th Street in East Harlem. Lots more photos can be found on the east-harlem.com site.

The boy martyr Muhammad Husayn Fahmida, mural located on Engelab Street across from the main entrance gate of Tehran University, Tehran. This mural was renovated in 2009 (see image no. 11). Fahmida was the most famous boy martyr of Iran. During the Iran-Iraq War, he attached a grenade to his waist, ran underneath an approaching Iraqi tank, and exploded himself and the tank while shouting aloud: “Here I come, oh Khomeini!” The mural provides a condensed narrative of Fahmida’s martyrdom, with Ayatollah Khomeini overlooking the event and recorded as stating: “Our guide is this twelve-year-old boy, who threw himself under the enemy’s tank with a grenade and destroyed it, thus drinking the elixir of martyrdom.”
